It was adequately essential at Domesday to have 2 slaves, a manorial church, swine pastures in the Weald at Horsted Keynes and Birchgrove, and brookland meadow south of Lewes still called 'Bormer Brook'.
Big blackthorn hedges mark the bounds of the medieval open fields of the hamlet, which slope southwards from the farm (). Moon's Corner slope (), recognized locally as Sunny Bank, is a little slope that lies north east of Sussex University and west of Ridge Road. It is flowery meadow with orange pointer butterflies in the little forest glades in the spring and a swathe of devil's bit scabious in late summertime.
In autumn many migrants visit in the meadow and common redstarts and spotted flycatchers are regularly seen on a stay prior to their flight over the English Channel. Waterpit Hill [modify] A brief walk passed Ridge Farm ruins is Waterpit Hill (). The south facing slope is intensively farmed, although in the field there is the tune of skylarks and along the course hedges there are nesting yellowhammer.
Offered its richness as pristine Downland character, it was a good prospect to become Gain access to land after the right to wander act in 2000. There is little scrub, other than at its eastern end, and a great deal of colour including cowslips, orchids, harebell, yellow rattle, devil's bit, wild carrot and picnicker's thistle.
